In the surrounding area are a cluster of small hamlets. In San Nazario the Monastery was abandoned in the early 1600’s, however in this area there is now an archaeological site. However, the ancient Mill still functions today and has been made into a museum – Museo della Mollitura e dell’Arte Contadina. There is also the Chiesa di San Nazario.
Other local hamlets are Sant’Andrea (which has the Chiesa della Madonna degli Angeli), Santa Caterina, Lesche, Fusco, Matassa, Celluccio, Sera, Macchia, Verticchio.
In the late 19th and early 20th century many of the local inhabitants left the Casalattico area to escape poverty in search of work. In particular, many were to settle in Ireland however some ventured to England, Scotland, Ireland and some ventured to the USA and South America.
During the Second World War Casalattico and surrounded towns and hamlets found themselves in the midst of the conflict between the German and Allied Forces along the Gustav Line. The local people had to endure much suffering and deprivation, and following the end of the war there was a renewed wave of emigration. Many emigrants still feel a strong bond with their homeland and during the summer months the population swells as many emigrants flood back to their home town catch up with family and friends and to celebrate what has become known as the Irish Feast.
